There are neighbourhoods in Madrid that are good at any time of year, and neighbourhoods that in spring become something else entirely. Not worse in winter or better in summer — simply different, with an additional layer that only appears when the temperature rises, the trees fill with green and the life of the city returns to the street rather than staying inside.

The neighbourhoods below are those that, in the experience of people who have lived Madrid at different times of year, undergo the most notable transformation with the arrival of spring. Not because they change in their fundamental character, but because that character is amplified when going outside stops being an inconvenience.

Chamberí · the neighbourhood that literally blossoms

Chamberí in winter is warm and authentic, but Chamberí in spring is something different: it is a neighbourhood that acquires an outdoor dimension that was dormant in January. Its squares — Olavide, Chamberí, Alonso Cano — are in March the first stage set for what will be Madrid’s outdoor life for the next few months. The first vermouths on the Olavide terraces, the first evening walks along the Paseo de la Habana, the first afternoons when people stay out on the street after the sun has gone down but the cold has not yet arrived.

The Chamberí market and Calle Ponzano, which in winter concentrate gastronomic life indoors, begin in March to spill outward: bars put tables on the pavements, restaurants open their windows, and that gastronomic corridor that in January was a place of quick transit becomes one of the most popular evening destinations in the city centre.

Malasaña and Chueca · the energy returns to the street

Malasaña and Chueca are neighbourhoods that in winter do not lose their character — they remain lively, creative, full of interesting people — but that in spring recover something the cold had taken away: the street as a space for living. Plaza del Dos de Mayo, Malasaña’s epicentre, is in March the place where that return is most visible: terraces fill up, musicians return to play in the square, children reclaim the benches.

For someone on a long stay in an apartment in the adjacent neighbourhoods — Chamberí, Almagro — Malasaña and Chueca are ten minutes on foot and offer in spring a programme of nightlife, dining and alternative culture that perfectly complements the calm of the residential neighbourhood where you live.

The Barrio de las Letras · culture spills onto the street

The Barrio de las Letras — the triangle between the Paseo del Prado, Calle Atocha and Calle de las Huertas — has a singularity that becomes especially evident in spring: it is the neighbourhood where cultural life and street life overlap most densely in all of Madrid. The terraces of Calle de las Huertas and Plaza de Santa Ana are in March the place where Madrileños start staying out late again with a beer as the excuse and the reality of simply not wanting to go home.

The Prado, the Thyssen, the Reina Sofía: all within walking distance of each other and of the neighbourhood. In spring, the idea of spending the morning in a museum and the afternoon on a terrace in the Barrio de las Letras has a natural coherence that in winter, while possible, requires more effort and more layers.

Salamanca · elegance reclaims the outdoors

Salamanca is perhaps the Madrid neighbourhood that experiences the change of season most visibly in its public space. In winter, its wide streets — Serrano, Velázquez, Lagasca — are for transit. In spring, they become Madrid’s most elegant promenade: people walking without rush, the cafés of a lifetime filling their chairs all at once, El Retiro five minutes away becoming a natural extension of the neighbourhood.

The Mercado de la Paz, which in January has the calm cadence of a winter market, in March begins receiving the first seasonal fruits and vegetables that completely change the gastronomic offer. For a couple or for someone who cooks at home, this shift in what the market has to offer is one of the most practical and most genuine arguments for early spring in Madrid.

Almagro · the secret neighbourhood at its finest in spring

Almagro is in winter one of the quietest neighbourhoods in central Madrid. In spring, it maintains that calm but adds a layer that in the cold months was inactive: life in its streets and gardens. The Paseo del General Martínez Campos, its avenue of trees newly covered in leaves, becomes the preferred morning walk for those who live in the neighbourhood. The art galleries marking the axis between Calle Miguel Ángel and Calle Almagro have a spring activity that during winter was more contained.

There is something about Almagro’s scale — tall buildings, wide streets, few noisy shops — that in spring produces an experience few European cities can match: silence and space in the centre of a capital. Not the silence of a dead neighbourhood, but the silence of one that lives well and has no need to make noise to prove it.

If you are thinking of living in Madrid in spring and want to choose the neighbourhood that best fits what you are looking for, at Prime Residence we have apartments in Chamberí, Salamanca, Almagro and Lista, and we know well the difference between living in each of them. We would be delighted to help you choose.

Madrid is one of those cities that feels completely different when experienced as a couple rather than alone. Not because it has more candlelit restaurants or more terraces with views — though it has both — but because it has something more subtle: an urban texture that invites sharing. Discovering things together. Having long conversations in places that become yours. Building, in a short time, your own sentimental geography in a city that was not yours to begin with.

If you are thinking of spending some time in Madrid as a couple — a few weeks or several months — what follows is an honest guide to how a couple lives in this city in winter: at what time, in which neighbourhoods, and at what pace.

Mornings: breakfast as the first ritual

Madrid has a breakfast culture that many European cities have lost. Not the quick coffee standing at the bar, but the long, seated breakfast, with or without a newspaper, that in the neighbourhoods of Chamberí, Salamanca and Almagro forms part of the natural rhythm of a weekend morning.

For a couple settled in the neighbourhood, breakfast quickly becomes a ritual of its own: the café on the corner that always has a table, the tostada con tomate that has no secret but that never tastes quite the same anywhere else, the January morning light coming through the tall windows. These small rituals are what transform a stay from a trip into a life — even if only temporarily.

Afternoons: museums, markets and the art of having no plan

Winter afternoons in Madrid as a couple have a special quality. The city offers options for every mood: on the days when culture calls, museums at this time of year can be explored calmly, without the pressure of high season. On the days when you simply want to walk, the neighbourhoods of Salamanca and Chamberí have a visual richness — architecture, shop windows, squares — that turns any stroll into a conversation about what you see.

Neighbourhood markets in winter are, for a couple who cooks at home, one of Madrid’s most genuine pleasures. The Mercado de la Paz, the Chamberí Market or the Antón Martín Market have in January a seasonal offering — game, winter vegetables, cheeses, cured meats — that makes cooking together in a well-equipped apartment something completely different from cooking with whatever is available at a convenience supermarket.

Evenings: the city that is never in a rush

Madrid at night in winter is, quite possibly, one of the finest urban experiences in Europe for a couple. Not because it is the liveliest city — it is, but others know that too — but because of the way it combines the interior warmth of its restaurants and bars with the pleasant cold of its lit streets. The feeling of going out to dinner on a Wednesday in January, without crowds, with the whole city seemingly scaled just for you, is hard to find anywhere else.

Madrid’s winter nightlife demands nothing. There is no obligation to stay out late or to be at the fashionable place. A long dinner in a restaurant in Almagro, a drink afterwards at a bar in Chamberí, the walk home through streets that at midnight still have people but no noise: that is what Madrid offers in winter to those who are not in a hurry.

Weekends: the rhythm that defines how you feel in the city

For a couple on a long stay, weekends are the true measure of quality of life in the city. And Madrid in winter offers weekends of unusual richness: Saturday morning for the market and the neighbourhood, the afternoon for an exhibition or a film at one of the city-centre original-version cinemas, Sunday for the Rastro and vermouth in La Latina, Sunday afternoon for cooking together and preparing for the week.

What makes that rhythm work is having a base that is up to the task. An apartment in central Madrid — with a real kitchen, with space for both of you, in a neighbourhood where you want to be — turns that weekend rhythm into something repeatable, something that becomes your version of Madrid, and something that at the end of the stay turns out to be the hardest thing to leave behind.

The neighbourhoods that work best for couples

Chamberí and Salamanca are the two neighbourhoods most consistently chosen by couples on long stays in Madrid. Chamberí for its warmth, neighbourhood life and gastronomy — Calle Ponzano, the market, the squares — and Salamanca for its quiet elegance, comfort and access to the best of the city without the drawbacks of the tourist centre.

Almagro, for couples who particularly value silence and privacy, is perhaps the most sophisticated option: a residential neighbourhood at the heart of the centre, with art, high-quality gastronomy and the feeling of being in a Madrid that does not answer to tourism.

If you want to find out which of these neighbourhoods best fits what both of you are looking for, at Prime Residence we have apartments in all of them and would be delighted to help you choose.

November is one of the most inspiring months to enjoy Madrid’s cultural life. The temperature cools, the city adopts a calm and elegant rhythm, and theatres, museums and cultural venues open new seasons full of exceptional programming. It’s the perfect moment for those who want to experience Madrid in a sophisticated, relaxed and deeply enriching way.

If you are staying in one of the luxury apartments from Prime Residence, you’ll be ideally located to make the most of everything happening in the capital. Below, we present a curated selection of cultural plans to enjoy a different kind of November in Madrid.

1. Theatre Premieres and Major Productions

November marks one of the strongest moments of the theatre season. Madrid’s most prestigious stages present premieres, anticipated revivals and international productions that showcase the city’s creative energy.

Teatro Real

The opera season is at its peak in November. Classic titles, contemporary reinterpretations and outstanding productions take over the Teatro Real, offering one of the most memorable cultural experiences in the city.

Gran Vía: Madrid’s “Broadway”

Musicals also launch their new seasons during this time. From internationally acclaimed productions to immersive shows and family-friendly spectacles, Gran Vía offers something for every taste.

Author and Independent Theatre

Venues such as Teatro Español, Teatro de la Abadía and Naves del Español in Matadero focus on contemporary works, intimate performances and experimental proposals — perfect for theatre lovers seeking depth and originality.

2. Must-See Exhibitions in Museums and Galleries

November is an ideal month to visit museums, as the cultural season is in full swing but without the heavy crowds of spring or summer. Madrid’s major museums renew their temporary galleries and offer exceptional exhibitions.

Museo del Prado

Beyond its world-class permanent collection, the Prado often inaugurates special exhibitions dedicated to great European masters. Visiting in November allows you to enjoy its galleries with more calm and detail.

Museo Reina Sofía

Contemporary art takes center stage with retrospectives, installations and exhibitions dedicated to influential 20th- and 21st-century artists. It’s a must for those seeking inspiration and reflection.

Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum

Its unique blend of classic, modern and contemporary art makes every visit a complete experience. Temporary exhibitions often feature international collaborations and thematic journeys of exceptional quality.

Art Galleries in Justicia, Salamanca and Chamberí

November is also a great time to explore Madrid’s dynamic gallery scene — photography, contemporary installations, conceptual art and emerging artists fill the exhibition calendars during this period.

3. Cultural Festivals and Special Events

November is one of the richest months in terms of festivals, many of which offer international programming and unique experiences.

Festival de Otoño (Autumn Festival)

One of Madrid’s most important cultural events. The festival includes theatre, dance, performance art, experimental music and avant-garde stage productions. It features companies from all over the world and takes place across multiple venues in the city.

JAZZMADRID

The city’s International Jazz Festival fills November with concerts in theatres, cultural centers and intimate venues. Renowned artists and rising voices come together in one of the most anticipated musical events of the season.

Science Week

Workshops, conferences, guided tours and family-friendly activities make science accessible and exciting. It’s a different cultural plan that blends education, innovation and curiosity.

4. Outdoor Cultural Experiences

Although November brings cooler weather, it’s still a fantastic month to enjoy cultural activities outdoors. Soft light, autumn colors and a quieter atmosphere create the perfect backdrop for unique experiences.

Literary Walks

Neighborhoods like Barrio de las Letras, Malasaña or Chamberí offer itineraries dedicated to authors who lived or wrote about Madrid. It’s a beautiful way to explore the city through literature and history.

Architecture and Urban Design Routes

Guided tours explore emblematic buildings from the 20th and 21st centuries, architectural landmarks and contemporary art interventions in public spaces — ideal for those who appreciate design and urban aesthetics.

Cultural Markets

Spaces like Matadero Madrid, Conde Duque or CentroCentro host seasonal markets, pop-up exhibitions and events celebrating design, craftsmanship and independent publishing.

5. Cultural Gastronomy

November is also an excellent month to enjoy Madrid’s gastronomic scene, which often incorporates cultural elements into the dining experience.

Wine-paired Dinners

Many restaurants, especially in areas like Salamanca or Chamberí, offer special menus paired with seasonal wines — a sophisticated way to enjoy gastronomy with an artistic touch.

Gourmet Markets

Mercado de San Miguel, San Antón and Platea Madrid often host culinary events, tastings and presentations from local producers during this month.

Autumn transforms Madrid into an even more elegant and charming city. The streets turn golden, the parks invite you to stroll among fallen leaves, and cafés and terraces regain their warm, cozy atmosphere. It’s undoubtedly one of the best times of year to enjoy the capital with calm, culture, and style. And when you can do so from a luxury apartment in Madrid, the experience becomes truly exceptional.

At Prime Residence, we’ve curated a selection of exclusive autumn plans to experience Madrid from the comfort and sophistication of one of our premium apartments, located in the city’s most desirable neighborhoods.

1. Discover the Charm of Autumn in Madrid

Madrid in autumn has a different rhythm. The light is softer, the weather is perfect for walking, and the city regains its essence after the summer.

Autumn not only brings golden hues and pleasant weather but also one of Madrid’s most anticipated cultural moments: the start of the theatre season. The Spanish capital transforms into a grand stage where art, music, and performance come to life. From international productions to classic plays and avant-garde performances, there’s something for every taste. If you’re passionate about theatre or simply looking for a unique experience, Madrid in autumn offers an exceptional cultural calendar.

And to enjoy it in style, staying in a luxury apartment with Prime Residence allows you to experience the theatre season from the very heart of the city’s cultural scene — combining elegance, comfort, and privacy for an unforgettable stay.

Madrid, the Theatre Capital of Spain

Few European cities can boast such a diverse and vibrant theatre scene as Madrid. With more than 150 theatres scattered throughout the city, the local stage offers everything from large-scale musicals and classical theatre to independent productions, comedy, and contemporary dance. September and October mark the beginning of the season, filled with premieres, festivals, and the reopening of iconic venues.

Gran Vía: Madrid’s Broadway

Gran Vía is the heart of Spanish musical theatre. Its lights, marquees, and historic venues attract thousands of spectators every year. In autumn, the billboards are renewed with productions that blend creativity, talent, and spectacular stage design.

Theatres You Can’t Miss

Teatro Lope de Vega: home to major musicals like “The Lion King,” a must-see for both locals and visitors.

Teatro Coliseum: another legendary Gran Vía venue, known for its large-scale productions and exceptional acoustics.

Teatro EDP Gran Vía: a space that combines tradition and modernity, with a diverse lineup including comedies, dance, and magic shows.

Beyond Gran Vía: The Hidden Gems of Madrid’s Theatre Scene

Madrid’s cultural life extends far beyond the city center. In neighborhoods like Chamberí, Lavapiés, and Las Letras, smaller theatres offer more intimate and experimental experiences. These venues champion independent productions, contemporary works, and immersive performances that connect audiences directly with the artists.

Notable Theatres and Cultural Spaces

Teatro Español: located in Plaza de Santa Ana, it’s the oldest theatre in Madrid and a true symbol of Spanish culture. Its programming includes both classical and modern works.

Teatro de la Abadía: situated in Chamberí, this venue focuses on thought-provoking, contemporary performances that blend art and philosophy.

Naves del Español at Matadero Madrid: a modern cultural hub that fuses theatre, live music, and visual arts in an industrial setting.

Teatros Luchana: offering multiple stages and a wide variety of shows, it’s perfect for an evening with friends or family.

Season Highlights and Festivals

The autumn and winter months fill Madrid’s theatre calendar with premieres and renowned festivals. These events have become essential dates for theatre lovers and performing arts enthusiasts alike.

Highlights of the Autumn Theatre Season

Festival de Otoño de Madrid: one of Spain’s most prestigious cultural events, featuring national and international companies presenting innovative, multidisciplinary productions.

Surge Madrid: focused on contemporary and alternative theatre, showcasing emerging artists and experimental formats.

Madrid en Danza: a festival dedicated to dance, with world-class choreographers and international performances.

Theatre Nights with a Gourmet Touch

A night at the theatre becomes even more special when paired with a fine dining experience. Madrid offers an abundance of restaurants near major theatres — perfect for pre-show dinners or after-theatre cocktails.

Recommended Restaurants Near Gran Vía

Casa Suecia: contemporary Mediterranean cuisine and a rooftop bar with spectacular views — ideal for a post-show cocktail.

Ten con Ten (Salamanca): a sophisticated setting and seasonal dishes for those seeking an exclusive dining experience.

Gran Clavel: a modern take on traditional Madrid cuisine, located just steps from Teatro Lope de Vega.

For something more intimate, the neighborhoods of Justicia and Chamberí are full of small restaurants and wine bars with charm — perfect for enjoying a relaxed meal before or after a show.

Tips for Enjoying Madrid’s Theatre Season

Book early: musicals and major premieres often sell out weeks in advance.

Explore different formats: mix a large production with an independent show to experience the full range of Madrid’s theatre scene.

Make it a complete evening: dinner, theatre, and a nighttime stroll through the illuminated city center make for a perfect cultural plan.

Stay close to the action: choose accommodation within walking distance of theatres to enjoy your evenings without rushing.

Madrid in August: 5 Tips to Make the Most of the City

August in Madrid offers a completely different vibe. The city slows down, streets are calmer, and the warm weather invites you to enjoy activities that might feel impossible at other times of the year. While many locals leave for vacation, those who stay or visit during this month discover a more authentic, comfortable, and accessible side of the Spanish capital. And if you stay in a luxury apartment in central Madrid with Prime Residence, you’ll have the perfect combination of comfort, exclusivity, and proximity to everything the city has to offer.

1. Enjoy the city without the crowds

One of the greatest advantages of visiting Madrid in August is the absence of large crowds typical of spring or Christmas. Museums, squares, and tourist attractions are much quieter, allowing for a more relaxed and personalized experience.

Museums and exhibitions without queues

The Prado Museum, Reina Sofía, and Thyssen-Bornemisza can all be explored at your own pace. Even temporary exhibitions that usually draw big crowds are easier to visit in August.

Stroll through iconic neighborhoods

The Literary Quarter, Malasaña, and La Latina are perfect for unhurried walks, enjoying outdoor terraces, or discovering boutique shops without the rush of high season.

2. Cool off on terraces, rooftops, and urban pools

In August, Madrid’s terraces and rooftops are ideal for spending long afternoons and evenings. From panoramic rooftops to stylish city pools, summer is best enjoyed from above.

Rooftops with breathtaking views

Venues like Picos Pardos Sky Lounge and Ginkgo Sky Bar offer cocktails and fine dining with sweeping views of the city—perfect for ending the day with a sunset.

Exclusive pools

Some hotels and private clubs offer day passes for their pools, making them a great way to refresh without leaving the city center.

3. Experience Madrid’s traditional August festivals

Madrid doesn’t stop in August—quite the opposite. Traditional celebrations fill the streets with music, color, and joy. The most famous is La Paloma Festival in the La Latina district, where gastronomy, music, and local tradition blend in a vibrant atmosphere.

Other August festivities

San Cayetano (early August) in the Embajadores neighborhood.

San Lorenzo (mid-August) in Lavapiés.

La Paloma (August 15) in La Latina.

These are great opportunities to enjoy open-air concerts, street food, and the most traditional side of Madrid.

4. Relax in Madrid’s green spaces

In August, Madrid’s parks and gardens become urban oases—perfect for picnics, leisurely walks, or early morning/late afternoon sports.

Must-visit parks

Retiro Park – row a boat or relax under centuries-old trees.

Casa de Campo – ideal for cycling routes or dining in open-air terraces.

Madrid Río – riverside walks with play areas and green spaces.

5. Indulge in fine dining without the wait

In August, securing a table at Madrid’s most exclusive restaurants is much easier, making it the perfect time for gourmet experiences.

Top restaurants

DiverXO – Madrid’s only three-Michelin-starred restaurant, led by Dabiz Muñoz.

Saddle – elegance and creative cuisine.

Ramón Freixa Madrid – Mediterranean haute cuisine with a twist.

For something more casual but equally delightful, gourmet markets like San Miguel or Platea Madrid are worth a visit.

Tips to make the most of Madrid in August

July is a month when the city breathes art. Streets, squares, and parks become open-air stages hosting activities for all audiences. The warm weather and pleasant evenings invite you to stay out late, enjoying everything from large international shows to charming local neighborhood events.

Open-Air Concerts: Music Under the Stars

One of July’s biggest attractions in Madrid is its open-air concerts. Venues such as Enrique Tierno Galván Park, the Sabatini Gardens, and El Retiro Park host music series covering all genres: jazz, flamenco, classical, pop, rock, and experimental sounds.

Many of these events feature special lighting, carefully designed staging, and an intimate atmosphere that makes each performance unforgettable. In several locations, you can also find dining areas where you can pair the experience with a glass of wine or a light dinner outdoors.

Must-Visit July Festivals

Veranos de la Villa Festival: a cultural highlight that brings together music, dance, theater, and film in various city venues, many of them outdoors.

Noches del Botánico: concerts in the Royal Botanical Garden of the Complutense University, featuring a mix of renowned artists and emerging talent.

Flamenco and traditional music series in historic plazas and courtyards, showcasing local heritage.

Theater and Outdoor Cinema

July in Madrid is also the stage for open-air theater performances in places like the El Retiro Puppet Theater or the Temple of Debod, where the magic of sunset enhances the scenic experience. Outdoor cinema is another summer classic, offering screenings that range from recent releases to cult films.

Some of the most popular summer film series include:

La Bombilla Park Cinema: one of the city’s oldest and most beloved.

Plaza Matadero Cinema: independent and art-house films in a creative industrial setting.

Rooftop screenings: a growing trend that combines cinema, spectacular views, and gastronomy.

Gastronomy Meets Culture

Many cultural events in July incorporate gastronomic experiences, creating well-rounded outings. You’ll often find food trucks, tasting areas, and collaborations with local chefs, allowing you to discover both the artistic and culinary flavors that make the city unique.

Some recommended options include tapas routes in neighborhoods like La Latina or Lavapiés, and gourmet tastings in markets such as San Miguel or San Antón.

Timeless July Cultural Events Calendar

While the exact programming changes each year, Madrid always offers in July:

Classical music concerts in plazas and historic gardens.

Jazz and flamenco series in open-air venues.

Multidisciplinary festivals such as Veranos de la Villa.

Outdoor cinema in parks and rooftops.

Theatrical performances in courtyards and historic settings.

Night markets with live music and food.

Tips for Making the Most of It

Check the official schedule in advance and buy tickets online to avoid queues.

Wear light, comfortable clothing, but bring a light jacket for cooler evenings.

If attending events in parks, bring a blanket or cushion for comfortable seating.

The transitional season didn’t last long. Autumn arrived all at once. Some consider it the twilight of the year, while others see it as the golden season. Like it or not, seasons come and go, which is why we recommend making the most of what each one has to offer.

With that in mind, we’d like to share some ideas for rural getaways to charming villages, perfect for this time of year, and conveniently close to Madrid.

CHINCHÓN

Just 45 kilometers from Madrid, this small village boasts one of the most picturesque main squares in Spain, thanks to the 234 turquoise-green wooden balconies adorning its surroundings. The Main Square of Chinchón is undoubtedly the main attraction, and it’s no wonder it has been named one of the Seven Wonders of the Cultural Heritage of the Community of Madrid. From here, you can admire three notable buildings worth visiting: the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, the Lope de Vega Theatre, and the Clock Tower. Visitors can also enjoy the rich local cuisine, especially known for its anise liqueurs. Don’t miss the chance to try Paloma de Chinchón, a sweet and aromatic liqueur distilled in the region for centuries.

Distance Madrid-Chinchón: 45 kilometers

Approximate travel time: 45 minutes by car, 60 minutes by bus

How to get there: By car or bus (Line 337 from Plaza Interchange)

BUITRAGO DE LOZOYA

Surrounded by water and protected by the best-preserved wall in the Madrid region, Buitrago de Lozoya stands out for its scenic beauty. The most striking feature for most visitors is the walled enclosure, declared a National Monument in 1931 and an essential part of the country’s medieval heritage.

Behind its ancient walls, you’ll find the ruins of the Castle of the Mendoza family (currently closed to the public), the Church of Santa María del Castillo, the Plaza de la Constitución, and the Clock Tower. Another must-visit is the Picasso Museum, which showcases a collection donated by Eugenio Arias, a friend and barber of the artist. Located in the Sierra de Guadarrama, the area also offers activities like hiking, cycling, or simply enjoying nature.

Distance Madrid-Buitrago de Lozoya: 74 kilometers

Approximate travel time: 50 minutes by car, 1 hour 40 minutes by bus

How to get there: By car or bus (Line 191 from Plaza Castilla)

ARANJUEZ

Just 50 minutes from Madrid, Aranjuez (declared a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape in 2001) offers numerous tourist attractions, making it one of the most visited destinations in both the region and Spain. Highlights include the Royal Site of Aranjuez, one of the most important royal residences of the Spanish monarchy. Commissioned by King Philip II in the 16th century and completed by Charles III three centuries later, the palace’s interior impresses with its opulent rooms, while the renowned gardens of Aranjuez stand out in the exterior.

A unique way to visit Aranjuez is aboard the Strawberry Train, a historic train operating from March to November. Staff dressed in period costumes offer tastings of Aranjuez strawberries during the journey. Aranjuez’s magnificence is undeniable, and it’s a destination we highly recommend during your stay in Madrid.

Distance Madrid-Aranjuez: 50 kilometers

Approximate travel time: 50 minutes by car or public transport

How to get there: By car, commuter train (Line C-3 from Chamartín, Sol, and Atocha), MD Madrid-Jaén, or the Strawberry Train

SAN LORENZO DE EL ESCORIAL

San Lorenzo de El Escorial is a must-see destination during your visit to Madrid. Located just 50 kilometers from the capital, it is renowned for housing the Monastery of El Escorial, one of the most impressive architectural marvels in Spain (and the world).

Like the Royal Site of Aranjuez, the Monastery was commissioned by King Philip II as a place of prayer, retreat, and eternal rest for the royal family. It symbolizes not only the monarchy’s religious devotion but also its power. Inside, you’ll find one of Spain’s most significant art collections, as well as highlights like the library (a true Renaissance gem) and the royal pantheon, which includes two chambers from different periods and styles: the 17th-century Baroque Pantheon of Kings and the 19th-century eclectic Pantheon of Infants.

What else can you explore in San Lorenzo de El Escorial? The Valle de los Caídos (Valley of Cuelgamuros), a symbolic and controversial site in modern Spanish history; the Chair of Philip II for a panoramic view of the town; and the Royal Coliseum of Charles III, the oldest covered theater still in use in Spain and the only royal court theater remaining functional.

Distance Madrid-San Lorenzo de El Escorial: 55 kilometers

Approximate travel time: 55 minutes by car, 60 minutes by train, or 1 hour 50 minutes by bus

How to get there: By car, commuter train (Line C-8a from Chamartín, Nuevos Ministerios, and Atocha), or bus (Lines 661 and 664 from Moncloa)

MANZANARES EL REAL

Manzanares El Real boasts a rich historical heritage, featuring everything from fountains, hermitages, and ancient Roman roads to an imposing medieval castle and prehistoric cave paintings. Nestled in the Regional Park of the Upper Manzanares Basin and the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, the village is surrounded by stunning natural landscapes, with La Pedriza and the Santillana Reservoir as standout attractions.

At the heart of the village, the Plaza del Pueblo and the Town Hall buildings are central spots reflecting the daily life and history of its residents. For more information, you can visit their official website.

Distance Madrid-Manzanares El Real: 55 kilometers

Approximate travel time: 40 minutes by car or 60 minutes by bus

How to get there: By car or bus (Line 724 from Plaza Castilla)

LA GRANJA DE SAN ILDEFONSO

La Granja de San Ildefonso offers a variety of attractions, but the standout is the Royal Site of San Ildefonso. This site is one of the best examples of 18th-century monarchical splendor, often reminiscent of Versailles. This may be due to its French Baroque style, reflected in its design, furnishings, and overall decoration—or perhaps it’s the palace gardens with their fountains, sculptures, and ponds that transport visitors to an extraordinary era.

During your visit, don’t miss the Royal Glass Factory of La Granja, one of the most fascinating sites in the area. Here, you can learn about the tradition of glassblowing, witness glass-making demonstrations, visit the Technological Glass Museum, and even purchase unique glassware or souvenirs from the official shop.

After this tour, you’ll likely work up an appetite. Luckily, there are plenty of excellent dining options, and we highly recommend Casa Zaca.

Distance Madrid-La Granja de San Ildefonso: 75 kilometers

Approximate travel time: 1 hour 20 minutes by car or bus

How to get there: By car or bus (from Moncloa)

PEDRAZA

The medieval village of Pedraza in Segovia is another must-visit. Everything about this charming town will take you on a journey back in time to the Middle Ages. What makes it so special? The cobblestone streets, the protective walls, the castle, the main square surrounded by noble houses with wooden balconies, the backdrop of the Sierra de Guadarrama, and much more make Pedraza a worthwhile destination. It was even declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1951.

Pedraza is also famous for its traditional cuisine, especially the high-quality local dishes. If you enjoy roast suckling lamb, Pedraza offers some of the best. If not, you can try alternatives like the famous Castilian soup or judiones de la Granja (large white beans).

Distance Madrid-Pedraza: 125 kilometers

Approximate travel time: 1 hour 30 minutes by car or 2 hours 30 minutes by train/bus with transfers

How to get there: By car or train/bus (from Chamartín)

PATONES DE ARRIBA

Patones is one of the most beautiful villages near Madrid, showcasing one of the best examples of arquitectura negra (black slate architecture) in the region. Its charm lies in its quaint slate constructions and the authentic atmosphere it preserves, making it a unique destination. The main attraction of Patones de Arriba is the village itself, with slate as the primary building material, cobblestone streets, and a storybook setting.

In recent decades, many residents moved to a more accessible area, leading to the development of a new village, Patones de Abajo. As a result, Patones de Arriba has become a primarily tourist destination. Today, its streets are home to rural houses, restaurants, craft shops, and traditional artisan workshops.

Distance Madrid-Patones de Arriba: 70 kilometers

Approximate travel time: 55 minutes by car or 2 hours by bus

How to get there: By car or bus with transfers (ALSA from Plaza Castilla)

SIGÜENZA

Ranked as the third most beautiful village in Spain by National Geographic’s Travel edition in 2024, Sigüenza in Guadalajara is a gem you can’t miss. Sigüenza is also home to Michelin-starred restaurants like El Molino de Alcuneza and El Doncel de Sigüenza.

Visitors to Sigüenza can explore various “Sigüenzas” within one town, starting with the medieval era and moving through the Renaissance, Baroque, Enlightenment, and Neoclassical periods to the present day. Each era adds a unique layer to its rich history. The castle, the cathedral, and the main square are three must-see landmarks.

Distance Madrid-Sigüenza: 130 kilometers

Approximate travel time: 1 hour 20 minutes by car or 2 hours by train

How to get there: By car or Regional Express train (from Chamartín)

There are certainly many charming villages near Madrid worth visiting. Besides the ones highlighted here, we can’t help but mention other gems like Ávila, Cercedilla, or Navacerrada, which we’ll save for another time.
